- After a short ferry ride, you will meet your tour Operator in Playa del Carmen. He will board you to the transport for a two-hour ride to the heart of the Mayan Jungle for Chichen Itzá, Maya for the city at the rim of the well of the Itza lord-gods. It was a highly cosmopolitan city with a wide range of distinct architectural styles displayed in both, its domestic buildings and its major monuments. To the main plaza’s west side, is the great Ball Court, the largest in all Mesoamerica with 500 feet in length and bounded bay walls reaching 30 feet in height. The most preeminent building is the pyramid of Kukulkan, also known as “El Castillo” (Spanish for The Castle), is located to the south and reaches 100 feet in height with a base extending over 300 feet across. The Temple of Warriors, located to the east, is a four-platform structure surrounded by 200 pillars with bass-relief carvings depicting individual warriors. The sacred “Cenote” (Sinkhole) is placed along a wide stucco-paved walkway 1000 feet to the north.
